Birchbark Berry Basket

Berry Baskets were traditionally used for:

  • storing berries and foodfood
  • carrying water
  • boiling food and so on.

Spruce gum was put on the seams after the basket was made, to seal it for carrying water. To use the basket as a cooking pot, clay mixed with dried grass was pressed against the sides and bottom of the basket and dried.

Round or Cylinder Baskets were traditionally used for:
  • carrying different types of baits by trappers and various tools
  • storing food, sewing materials, and so on.

Bowl Baskets were traditionally used for:
  • tableware (plates, bowls and cups)
  • wash basin
  • bath
  • soaking moosehide during the tanning process
  • cooking
  • laundry basin and so on.
